Obed Macy (born December 14, 1801, died July 19, 1857) was an American doctor and an early settler, known as a pioneer, in Los Angeles County, California. He arrived by wagon train shortly after California became part of the United States. Obed and his son, Oscar Macy, were both members of the Los Angeles Common Council, which was like the city's government. They also ran one of Los Angeles's famous old hotels.

Early Life and Family Journey

Obed Macy was born on December 14, 1801, in New Garden, Guilford County, North Carolina. His parents were William Macy and Mary Barnard. In 1824, he married Lucinda Polk in Bruceville, Indiana, where he worked as a doctor for many years.

In 1850, the Macy family traveled to California. They joined several other families from Knox County, Indiana, on a long journey by wagon train. Their wagons were pulled by oxen.

The trip was very difficult and lasted nine months. Sadly, one of their children, Charles, passed away during the journey. The family faced many challenges, including a lack of water and food for their animals.

They first arrived in San Francisco. However, in 1851, they moved to the area of El Monte, California. They were among the first American settlers in that place. A year later, they moved to Los Angeles.

Obed and Lucinda Macy had thirteen children. One son, also named Obed, later became involved in business in Los Angeles. Another son, Oscar, also played an important role in the city.

Obed Macy passed away on July 19, 1857.

Obed Macy's Work in Los Angeles

Obed Macy was the first doctor in the Los Angeles area. Besides his medical work, he also started a bathhouse called The Alameda. This was a place where people could go to bathe and relax.

He also bought the Bella Union Hotel. This hotel was a well-known place in Los Angeles for many years.

Public Service in Los Angeles

Obed Macy was chosen to be a member of the Los Angeles Common Council. This was a special election held on January 5, 1855. His term on the council ended on May 9 of the same year.

Macy Family Legacy

A street in Downtown Los Angeles was once named Macy Street. This name honored the Macy family ranch that used to be in the area. In 1920, city officials thought about changing the name of Macy Street. They wanted it to have the same name as Brooklyn Avenue, which was a nearby street.

However, a group called the Native Sons of the Golden West spoke to the City Council. They asked for the Macy Street name to stay, and their request was granted.

Years later, in May 1993, the City Council decided to change the name of Macy Street. They also changed part of Sunset Boulevard and all of Brooklyn Avenue. These streets were renamed Cesar Chavez Avenue, to honor the famous labor leader César Chávez.

Even though the street name changed, a bridge over the Los Angeles River is still often called the "Macy Street Viaduct."
