Exploring the Offenbach District's Location
The Offenbach Rural District is right in the middle of a busy area called the Rhine Main area. This region is in the south of the state of Hesse. The district is also very close to the big city of Frankfurt, which is a major center for business and travel. To the east, the district shares a border with the state of Bavaria.
The total size of the district is about 356 square kilometers. This area is mostly flat, with only a few small hills. It sits about 100 to 150 meters above sea level. The district is located southwest of the Main river. Some towns and villages, like Mainhausen, Hainburg, Seligenstadt, and Mühlheim, are right next to this river.
Two small creeks, the Rodau and the Bieber, flow through the district from south to north. These creeks eventually flow into the Main river.
Millions of years ago, about 35 to 20 million years ago, this entire region was covered by a warm, shallow ocean. Over time, lots of sand and other materials settled at the bottom of this ocean. Later, the land rose, and the water left. This left behind soil that is mostly sandy and not very rich.
As of 2008, about 336,818 people live in the Offenbach Rural District. The weather here is usually mild, and it doesn't rain as much as in some other parts of Germany.
Towns and Villages in Offenbach District
Since 1977, the Offenbach Rural District has been made up of 10 cities and 3 independent villages. In 2002, the city of Dietzenbach became the capital of the district. It's important to know that the city of Offenbach itself is a separate city and not part of this rural district.

A Brief Look at Offenbach District's Past
The Offenbach Rural District was first created in the year 1832. Back then, the city of Offenbach was its capital. In 1938, the city of Offenbach became its own separate "urban district." However, the main office for the rural district's administration stayed in the city of Offenbach for many years. Then, in 2002, the capital officially moved to Dietzenbach, where it is today.
