One Day at HorrorLand is a scary book by R. L. Stine. It's the sixteenth book in the popular Goosebumps series. This book is about a family who gets lost and ends up in a very strange theme park. The story was also made into a two-part TV episode. It even inspired comic books and video games. The spooky theme park, HorrorLand, later became the setting for a whole new series of Goosebumps books.

Story Summary

The Morris family, Carl, Peggy, Lizzy, and Luke, along with their friend Clay, get lost. They accidentally find a creepy theme park called HorrorLand. After they park their car, it suddenly explodes! But the ticket-taker just tells them not to worry.

Lizzy, Luke, and Clay explore the park. They go on some rides. One ride locks Lizzy in a casket that travels down a river. After this, the kids try to convince their parents to leave. Carl and Peggy say they had weird experiences too. So, they all decide to find the monsters, called Horrors, and leave.

The family and Clay discover the park gates are locked. The monsters then surround them. Lizzy gets angry and tries to pull a mask off one of the monsters. She finds out it's not a mask at all; it's the monster's real face! The Horrors explain that they are real monsters. They also say that the family's scary experiences were part of a TV show.

To say sorry, the monsters offer to lead them to a new car. But instead, they lead them to hungry, meat-eating animals! The family survives the animal attack. Then, the monsters try to hurt them again. Lizzy suddenly remembers signs in the park that said "No pinching."

The visitors quickly start pinching all the monsters. When pinched, the monsters deflate like balloons! The Morris family and Clay escape HorrorLand in a different car. But in a surprise ending, a Horror was holding onto the back of their car. It stayed there all the way to their home! The monster then offers them free passes for their next visit to HorrorLand.

Other Versions

One Day at HorrorLand has been turned into different types of entertainment.

Video Games

A video game called Goosebumps: Escape from HorrorLand came out in 1996. It was made by DreamWorks for computers. In this game, players meet famous movie monsters like Dracula. Another video game, Goosebumps HorrorLand, was released in 2008. This game was for the Wii, Nintendo DS, and PlayStation 2. Players try to escape from the theme park in this game. The book also became a board game in 1996, made by Milton Bradley Company.

Graphic Novel

The story was also made into a graphic novel. This is like a comic book that tells a full story. It was part of a collection called Terror Trips. Jill Thompson drew the pictures for this version. Some people thought the drawings looked a bit like Japanese manga comics.

TV Episodes

The book was made into a two-part episode for the Goosebumps TV show. These episodes were part of the third season. The first part aired on October 25, 1997, and the second part on November 1, 1997. The character Clay was not in the TV show episodes. Many people found these episodes fun and quite scary.
