One Financial Center is a very tall, modern building in Boston, Massachusetts. It is often called a skyscraper. This building is located near Dewey Square in an area of Boston called the Financial District.

One Financial Center was built in 1983. It stands 590 feet (180 meters) tall. This makes it the 9th-tallest building in Boston. It has 46 floors inside.

The first two floors have a special lobby area. This lobby is called an atrium. It has a tall glass roof and is about 90 feet (27 meters) high. The other floors in the building are used as offices. Many different types of businesses work here. These include law firms, Certified Public Accountants (people who help with money and taxes), and companies that handle money.

Building Location and Design

The building sits on a unique piece of land. It is a triangular area about 1.23 acres (5000 square meters) in size. This spot is right next to South Station, a big train station. It is also near the Federal Reserve Bank Building. The location connects the Fort Point Channel area with Boston's Financial District.

The building's roof is flat. It does not have a fancy top or crown. However, two tall radio masts are on top. These masts help the building reach a total height of 683 feet (208 meters). This measurement is called its "pinnacle height." When measured this way, One Financial Center is the 4th-tallest building in Boston.

Building on Tricky Ground

Building One Financial Center was a bit tricky. This is because it was built on soil, not directly on solid rock (called bedrock).

During a huge construction project called the Big Dig, extra care was needed. The Big Dig created new underground highways in Boston. Part of this work happened very close to One Financial Center. It was only about 25 feet (7.6 meters) from the building's foundation. Workers had to be very careful to prevent the ground from sinking. This sinking is called subsidence. They made sure the building stayed safe and stable.
