History of Orchards
Orchards had a different name long ago. It was first called Fourth Plain. There are a few ideas about how it got this name. One story says that in 1846, a person named Dugald McTavish was exploring land near Fort Vancouver. This fort was a fur trading post.
McTavish described four open, flat areas, or "plains," surrounded by thick woods. People at the trading post then numbered these plains. This gave the community its original name, Fourth Plain.
However, residents wanted a more special name. In 1904, they voted to change the name. They chose "Orchards" because there were many fruit trees growing in the area.
