Osage City is a city located in Osage County, Kansas, in the United States. In 2020, about 2,861 people lived there. The city is named after the Osage Nation, a Native American tribe.

History of Osage City

Osage City was first planned out in late 1869. This happened after the route for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway was decided. The city officially became a city in April 1872.

Coal Mining in Osage City

In the 1800s, Osage City was a very busy town because of its coal mines. The first coal mines opened in the summer of 1870. They were started by the Osage Carbon, Coal & Mining Company. At one point, there were 28 mine shafts, and 1,200 men worked in them.
