A Look Back in Time
Oshkosh was founded in the 1880s by cattle ranchers. They discovered that the land nearby was perfect for their livestock to graze. The city was named after Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The very first post office in Oshkosh opened its doors in 1889.
Growth and Development
A big step for Oshkosh was when the railroad reached the city in 1908. This made it easier to transport goods and people. In 1909, Oshkosh was chosen to be the county seat for the newly formed Garden County. The city officially became an incorporated city in 1910.
A Powerful Storm
On April 26, 1938, a very strong tornado, estimated to be an F5 on the Fujita Scale, struck near the city. This powerful storm caused a lot of damage, including destroying a school and two farms. Tragically, some children lost their lives during this event.
