History of the Church
This beautiful church was designed by Augustus Pugin, a very well-known architect. It cost about £2,586 to build, which was a lot of money back then! The plans for the church were first asked for by Henry Howard. He lived nearby at Corby Castle. His plans also included a house for the priest and the church grounds.
Stained Glass Windows
The amazing stained glass windows in the church were given by Philip Howard. They were added between 1860 and 1867. These windows show pictures of important saints. You can see St Thomas More and St Oliver Plunkett, among others. A company called John Hardman made these colorful windows.
Special Statues and Relics
Inside the church, you will find statues of Our Lady of Lourdes and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. There is also a small statue of the Infant Jesus of Prague. The church also has a special container called a reliquary. This reliquary holds relics (small pieces) of Saint Petronia. These relics came to the church from a very important church leader, Cardinal Merry del Val.
Church Parish and Services
For a long time, the church was looked after by the Benedictine monks from Ampleforth Abbey. It was also connected to St Ninian's Chapel in Brampton.
From 2014 to 2020, Our Lady and St Wilfrid's Church was part of a larger group called the parish of Our Lady of Eden. This group included Our Lady and St Joseph's in Carlisle and St Ninian's. Later, in 2020, this parish became part of an even bigger Catholic parish. This new parish is called Our Lady of Perpetual Help. It serves all of Carlisle and the surrounding area. The church is part of the Diocese of Lancaster.
Today, church services are held at Our Lady and St Wilfrid's. You can attend Mass on Thursday mornings at 10 AM. There is also a special evening Mass on Saturdays at 4 PM. This Saturday service counts as your Sunday church attendance.
