Palisade Canyon is a cool canyon in northern Eureka County, Nevada, United States. It follows the Humboldt River.
What is Palisade Canyon?
This canyon stretches along the Humboldt River. It starts near Nevada State Route 278, which is about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) south of Carlin. The canyon then goes downstream to a spot about 13 kilometers (8 miles) west of Beowawe and Nevada State Route 306. This spot is roughly 51 kilometers (32 miles) east of Battle Mountain.
The Humboldt River's Journey
The Humboldt River is quite unique! Unlike most rivers, it doesn't flow into an ocean. Instead, all its water eventually dries up in a place called the Humboldt Sink.
Scientists from the United States Geological Survey study the river's flow. They've found that Palisade Canyon is a special spot. It's where the river stops getting bigger and starts to lose water. This means the canyon marks a key point in the river's journey across Nevada.
How Palisade Canyon Got Its Name
The canyon was named because it looked a lot like another famous place: the Hudson River Palisades. The word "palisade" often means a line of tall, steep cliffs, which fits both locations!
