Carlin is a small city in Nevada, a state in the western United States. It's located in the northeast part of Nevada, about 23 miles (37 km) west of the city of Elko. Carlin is known for its connection to the Carlin Trend, a very rich area for gold mining.

The city is situated along Interstate 80 and is about 4,900 feet (1,494 meters) above sea level. Carlin was named after William Passmore Carlin, a general from the American Civil War. Its official slogan is "Where the Train Stops...And the Gold Rush Begins," which hints at its history with railroads and gold.

Carlin's Location and Land

Carlin is found in Elko County. It is southeast of an important area called the Carlin Trend. This trend is one of the best places in the United States for finding gold.

The city covers a total area of about 10.4 square miles (27.0 square kilometers). All of this area is land, meaning there are no large lakes or rivers within the city limits.

I-80 passes through Carlin, connecting it to other areas.

According to the 2000 census, Carlin had 2,161 residents. There were 792 households in the city. Many households included families, with 39.3% having children under 18 living there.

The population was made up of people of various ages. About 30.8% of the residents were under 18 years old. The median age in Carlin was 34 years.

Carlin's Past

Carlin has some interesting historical events. One notable event involved a train accident.

On August 12, 1939, a train called the City of San Francisco crashed. This happened while it was crossing a bridge near Carlin. Sadly, 24 people died and 121 were hurt. The cause of the crash was thought to be sabotage, but it has never been fully solved.

Carlin was also once home to John "Rolling Thunder" Pope (1916–1997). He was a Native American medicine man who worked on the railway as a brakeman.
