Panagiotis "Panos" Fasoulas, born on May 12, 1963, in Thessaloniki, Greece, is a famous Greek person. He was a professional basketball player and later became a politician. He was chosen by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1986 NBA draft, but he decided not to play in the NBA. During his career, Fasoulas won many team awards and personal honors.
In 1997, playing for the Greek team Olympiacos Piraeus, Fasoulas won the EuroLeague championship. He also won the European Triple Crown that same year. He was recognized as a top player many times, including being a four-time FIBA European Selection and a FIBA EuroStar. With the senior Greek national team, Fasoulas won a gold medal at the 1987 FIBA EuroBasket. He was also named to the All-Tournament Team at that event.
Many people think Fasoulas is one of the best centers in European basketball history. He was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2016. In 2022, he also joined the Greek League Hall of Fame.

Panagiotis Fasoulas's Basketball Journey
College Basketball
When he was younger, Fasoulas moved from Greece to the United States to play college basketball. He first played at the Hellenic College. The coach, Dick Dukeshire, who had coached in Greece before, recruited him. Fasoulas played for two seasons with the Hellenic College Owls.
After that, Fasoulas played college basketball at North Carolina State University for the N.C. State Wolfpack. He played under the famous coach Jim Valvano. In his one season with the Wolfpack (1985–86), Fasoulas was a strong player. He led his team in blocked shots per game.
Professional Basketball Career
During his professional career, Fasoulas played for two major Greek teams: PAOK Thessaloniki and Olympiacos Piraeus. With PAOK, he helped them win the FIBA Cup Winners' Cup in the 1990–91 season. With Olympiacos, he achieved a huge success by winning the EuroLeague championship and the Triple Crown in the 1996–97 season.
Fasoulas was chosen for the FIBA European Selection four times (in 1990, twice in 1991, and in 1995). He was also named a FIBA EuroStar in 1996.
In Greece, Fasoulas won 5 Greek League championships and 3 Greek Cups. He was named the Greek League Finals MVP in 1992. He also won the Greek League MVP award twice, in 1994 and 1995. He was the top player for rebounds in the Greek League in 1987. He also led the league in blocked shots in 1994 and 1997. In 2022, Fasoulas was honored by being inducted into the Greek League Hall of Fame.
Playing for the Greek National Team
Fasoulas was also a very important player for the senior Greek national team. He was the starting center when Greece won the gold medal at the 1987 FIBA EuroBasket. He was also named to the All-Tournament Team at that event. He won a silver medal with Greece at the 1989 FIBA EuroBasket.
At the 1994 FIBA World Championship in Toronto, Canada, Fasoulas played some of the best basketball of his career. Greece finished in fourth place at that tournament. Overall, Fasoulas played in 244 games for Greece. He is second all-time in games played and third all-time in points scored for Greece's senior men's team.

After he stopped playing basketball, Fasoulas became a basketball manager. He worked as the sports director for Olympiacos Women's team. This team plays in the Greek Women's League and the EuroLeague Women.

Political Career
Panagiotis Fasoulas is known for his friendly personality. After he retired from basketball, he decided to enter politics. He joined the political party called PASOK.
He helped organize the Summer Olympic Games in Athens in 2004. On October 15, 2006, he was elected as the Mayor of Piraeus. He served as Mayor until 2010.
