Panagiotis "Panos" Fasoulas (born May 12, 1963, in Thessaloniki, Greece) is a famous Greek politician and a former professional basketball player. He was picked by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1986 NBA draft. However, he decided not to play in the NBA. During his career, Fasoulas won many team titles and personal awards.

In 1997, playing for the Greek team Olympiacos Piraeus, Fasoulas won the EuroLeague championship. This is a top basketball competition in Europe. He also won the European Triple Crown that same year. This means winning three major titles in one season. He was chosen four times for the FIBA European Selection and once as a FIBA EuroStar. With the senior Greek national team, Fasoulas won the gold medal at the 1987 FIBA EuroBasket. He was also named to the All-Tournament Team at that event.

Many people think Fasoulas is one of the best centers in European basketball history. He was added to the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2016. In 2022, he also joined the Greek League Hall of Fame.

Panagiotis Fasoulas's Basketball Journey

College Basketball Years

When he was young, Fasoulas moved from Greece to the United States to play college basketball. He first played at the Hellenic College. The coach, Dick Dukeshire, who had coached in Greece before, brought him to the school. Fasoulas played for two seasons with the Hellenic College Owls team.

After that, Fasoulas played college basketball at North Carolina State University for the N.C. State Wolfpack. He played for the famous coach Jim Valvano. In his one season with the Wolfpack (1985–86), Fasoulas scored about 2.8 points and grabbed 3.2 rebounds per game. He also led his team with 1.8 blocks per game in 29 games.

Professional Basketball Career

During his professional career, Fasoulas played for two big Greek teams: PAOK Thessaloniki and Olympiacos Piraeus. With PAOK, he won the FIBA Cup Winners' Cup in the 1990–91 season. This was a major European club competition.

With Olympiacos, he won the EuroLeague championship and the Triple Crown in the 1996–97 season. He was chosen for the FIBA European Selection four times (1990, 1991 twice, and 1995). He was also named a FIBA EuroStar in 1996.

In Greece, Fasoulas won 5 Greek League championships and 3 Greek Cups. He was named the Greek League Finals MVP (Most Valuable Player in the finals) in 1992. He also won the overall Greek League MVP award in 1994 and 1995. He was the best at rebounding in the Greek League in 1987. He also led the league in blocked shots in 1994 and 1997. Fasoulas was honored by being added to the Greek League Hall of Fame in 2022.

Playing for the Greek National Team

Fasoulas was also a key player for the senior Greek national team. He was the starting center when Greece won the gold medal at the 1987 FIBA EuroBasket. He was also chosen for the All-Tournament Team that year. He won a silver medal with Greece at the 1989 FIBA EuroBasket.

At the 1994 FIBA World Championship in Toronto, Canada, Greece finished in fourth place. Many say Fasoulas played his best basketball during this tournament. In total, Fasoulas played 244 games for Greece, scoring about 9.77 points per game. He is second all-time in games played and third all-time in points scored for Greece's senior men's team.

Fasoulas played for Greece in many big FIBA tournaments. These include the 1983 FIBA EuroBasket, the 1987 FIBA EuroBasket, the 1989 FIBA EuroBasket, and the 1996 Summer Olympics. He also played in several Balkan Championships and the 1983 Mediterranean Games.

After Playing: Managerial Role

After he stopped playing basketball, Fasoulas became a basketball manager. He became the sports director for Olympiacos Women. This team plays in the Greek Women's League and the EuroLeague Women.

Panagiotis Fasoulas's Political Career

Panagiotis Fasoulas is known for his strong personality. After he retired from sports, he entered politics. He joined the political party called PASOK. He helped organize the Summer Olympic Games in Athens in 2004. He was elected as the Mayor of Piraeus on October 15, 2006. He served as Mayor until 2010.
