Panama is a small village located in Chautauqua County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 465 people lived there. Panama is in the northwest part of the town of Harmony. You can find it where State Route 474 (also called Main Street) meets County Route 33.

The village gets its name from a cool place nearby called Panama Rocks. This is a huge group of rock formations found south of the village. If you look closely at the rocks, you can see Paleozoic fossils. These are remains of ancient plants and animals from a very long time ago. Panama Rocks is a popular place for tourists to visit. The owners charge a small fee to enter.

History of Panama Village

The village of Panama officially became a village in 1861. This means it got its own local government.

One of the first people to settle here was George Hawkins. He bought land in 1825. George and his wife, Rhoda Powers, worked hard to clear their land. They made a living from farming. Rhoda's father, Simeon Powers, helped start a Baptist church in the area.

The U.S. Post Office in Panama opened in 1826. This was the first time the name "Panama" was officially used for the area. People say the village got its name from someone who had traveled across the Isthmus of Panama. This person thought the rock formations here looked like the ones in Panama. It might have been Moses Cushman Marsh, who was Panama's first postmaster. He ran a trading company and had previously worked in Cuba.
