Patria Vieja (pronounced PAHT-ree-ah VYEH-hah) means "Old Fatherland" in Spanish. It was an important time in the History of Chile. This period lasted from September 18, 1810, to October 1, 1814. It began with the creation of the First Government Junta and ended with the Disaster of Rancagua.
During this time, Chile started to organize its own government. This happened because King Ferdinand VII of Spain was imprisoned by Napoleon. Even though they formed their own government, they still promised to be loyal to the king.
What Was Patria Vieja?
The Patria Vieja period was a big change for Chile. It started as a movement for temporary self-rule. But it slowly grew into a fight for complete independence from Spain.
Two important things happened during this time. First, the Carrera brothers, especially José Miguel Carrera, became very powerful in politics. Second, Bernardo O'Higgins led many important army battles as a general. These battles included the Battle of Membrillar, Battle of Yerbas Buenas, and Battle of El Roble.
New Government and Laws
During Patria Vieja, Chile set up its own government. They created a Government Junta and a National Congress. These groups were in charge of running the country while the Spanish king was imprisoned.
The National Congress passed a very important law. It was called "Liberty of the Womb." This law said that any child born to enslaved people on Chilean land from that day forward would be free. This was a big step towards ending slavery.
In 1812, Chile also passed its first temporary constitution. This document stated that Chile would recognize the Spanish king. However, the king would have to agree to certain rules and laws set by Chile.
