Patric Hörnqvist's Hockey Journey

Starting Out in Sweden

Patric Hörnqvist was born on January 1, 1987, in Sollentuna, Sweden. He started playing hockey in local clubs like Gillbo IF. Later, he played junior hockey for Väsby IK Hockey.

In 2004, he joined Djurgårdens IF. He played a few games for their junior team in the 2004–05 season. In the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, the Nashville Predators picked him. He was the very last player chosen, 230th overall!

Hörnqvist made his top Swedish league debut in 2005. He played 47 games and scored five goals. In 2007, he was named the Elitserien Rookie of the Year. He had a great season, scoring 23 goals.

Playing for the Nashville Predators

Hörnqvist moved to North America for the 2008–09 NHL season. He hoped to play for the Predators. At first, he played mostly for their minor league team, the Milwaukee Admirals. He scored his first NHL goal on October 15, 2008.

In the 2009–10 NHL season, Hörnqvist really shined. He led the Predators in goals with 30. He also tied for the team lead in points with 51. He signed a five-year contract extension with Nashville in 2013.

Winning Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins

On June 27, 2014, Hörnqvist was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins. He joined star player Sidney Crosby. It was interesting because Crosby was drafted first in 2005, and Hörnqvist was drafted last.

Hörnqvist quickly made an impact with the Penguins. He scored his first goal with them in his very first game. On February 29, 2016, he scored his first career hat-trick (three goals in one game). He also had an assist in a 6–0 win.

In the 2016 playoffs, Hörnqvist scored another hat-trick. He helped the Penguins win the 2016 Stanley Cup Final. This was his first Stanley Cup championship.

On June 11, 2017, Hörnqvist scored the winning goal in Game 6 of the 2017 Stanley Cup Finals. This goal helped the Penguins win their second straight Stanley Cup. It was special because he scored against his old team, the Predators.

On December 4, 2018, Hörnqvist scored three goals in just 2 minutes and 47 seconds. This was the fastest hat-trick in Penguins history!

Time with the Florida Panthers and Retirement

On September 24, 2020, Hörnqvist was traded to the Florida Panthers. He played for the Panthers for three seasons. His last season, 2022–23, ended early due to an injury.

Patric Hörnqvist announced his retirement from playing hockey on June 29, 2023. He had an amazing 18-year professional career.

Even after retiring as a player, Hörnqvist stayed involved in hockey. In 2024, he won his third Stanley Cup. This time, he won it as a scout and development consultant for the Florida Panthers.
