Patrick Patterson (born March 14, 1989) is an American former professional basketball player. He played in the NBA (National Basketball Association) for several teams. These include the Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings, Toronto Raptors, Oklahoma City Thunder and Los Angeles Clippers.

Early Life and High School Success

Patrick Patterson was born in Washington, D.C.. He grew up in Huntington, West Virginia. In 2007, he graduated from Huntington High School. During his time there, Patrick helped his high school team win three state championships in a row. He won his third championship during his senior year. Another talented player, O. J. Mayo, also helped the team that year.

Experts considered Patterson a top young player. He was called a "five-star recruit" by Rivals.com. This means he was one of the best high school players in the country. In 2007, he was ranked as the third-best power forward and the 17th-best player overall in the nation. He was also named a McDonald's All-American. This is a special honor for top high school basketball players.

College Basketball Career

Patrick Patterson played college basketball for the University of Kentucky (UK). He chose Kentucky over other famous schools like Duke and Florida. This decision was a big deal in the basketball world. He played for different coaches during his college years. These included Tubby Smith, Billy Gillispie, and later John Calipari.

Freshman Year: A Strong Start

During his first year at Kentucky in the 2007–08 season, Patrick played very well. He scored about 16.4 points per game. He also grabbed 7.7 rebounds (getting the ball after a missed shot). Plus, he made 1.2 blocks (stopping an opponent's shot) and 0.8 steals (taking the ball from an opponent). He shot 57% from the field, meaning he made more than half of his shots.

Unfortunately, he got a stress fracture in his left ankle. This injury made him miss the rest of his freshman season. At the time, he said he wanted to stay at Kentucky. He did not plan to enter the NBA draft yet. The NBA draft is where professional teams pick new players from college.

Sophomore Year: A Dynamic Duo

In his second year at Kentucky (2008–09 season), Patrick teamed up with Jodie Meeks. They became a very successful pair on the court. On December 22, 2008, Patrick scored a career-high 33 points in one game. He made 15 out of 17 shots! That season, he averaged 17.9 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. He also had 2.1 blocks and 0.6 steals. He shot an amazing 60% from the field.

After this great season, Patrick thought about entering the 2009 NBA draft. But he decided to return to Kentucky for his third year.

Junior Year: Team Success and New Skills

Patrick continued to be a key player in his junior year. However, new talented freshmen joined the team. These included John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, and Eric Bledsoe. This meant Patrick didn't have to be the main scorer or rebounder anymore. He also worked on his outside shot. He started shooting about 35% from the three-point line. This was a big improvement, as he hadn't made any three-pointers in his earlier seasons.

During this season, Patrick helped his team win the SEC tournament. They also earned a top seed in the NCAA tournament. This was the first time since 2004. On April 23, 2010, Patrick decided to enter the 2010 NBA draft. By then, he had finished his college classes and earned his degree.

On June 24, 2010, the Houston Rockets picked Patrick Patterson in the NBA draft. He was the 14th player chosen overall. On November 10, he was sent to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. This team is part of the NBA Development League, which is like a minor league for the NBA. With the Vipers, he averaged 18.3 points and 10.3 rebounds per game.

He was called back to the Rockets after just nine games. He played his first NBA regular season game on December 15, 2010. On March 14, 2011, Patrick got his first start for the Rockets. This happened because another player, Luis Scola, was injured. For the 2012–13 season, Patrick became the main starting power forward for the Rockets. This was after Scola was waived by the team.

Sacramento Kings: A Short Stop (2013)

On February 20, 2013, Patrick was traded to the Sacramento Kings. A trade means players are swapped between teams. He moved to the Kings along with Toney Douglas and Cole Aldrich. In return, the Rockets received Thomas Robinson, Francisco García, and Tyler Honeycutt.

Toronto Raptors: A Key Role Player (2013–2017)

Later that year, on December 9, 2013, Patrick was traded again. This time, the Kings sent him to the Toronto Raptors. He went with Greivis Vásquez, John Salmons, and Chuck Hayes. The Raptors sent Rudy Gay, Quincy Acy, and Aaron Gray to the Kings.

On July 12, 2014, Patrick signed a new contract with the Raptors. It was for three years and reportedly worth $18 million. He played an important role for the Raptors during these years.

Oklahoma City Thunder: New Team, New Challenges (2017–2019)

On July 10, 2017, Patrick signed with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Shortly after, on August 10, 2017, he had surgery on his left knee. On August 1, 2019, Patrick and the Thunder agreed to a "buyout." This means they ended his contract early, making him a free agent. A free agent can sign with any team they choose.

Los Angeles Clippers: Final NBA Years (2019–2021)

On August 16, 2019, Patrick signed with the Los Angeles Clippers. He played for them for two seasons. On September 23, 2021, he signed with the Portland Trail Blazers. However, he was waived (released) by them on October 16, after playing in only two preseason games.
