Even though Patrick was a highly rated player, he didn't get many offers from big schools at first. He really wanted to play in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). He eventually received an offer from LSU, his top choice. He committed to LSU on February 28, 2016. Patrick was the first player from Livonia High School to get a scholarship from LSU.

In his first year at LSU (2017), Patrick played in 12 games and made six tackles. In his second year (2018), he had 40 tackles and one sack.

Patrick's junior year (2019) was outstanding. He made 85 tackles, had three sacks, and one interception. He helped lead the LSU Tigers to win the 2020 College Football Playoff National Championship. In that championship game, he was named the Defensive MVP (Most Valuable Player). He made eight tackles and had 2.5 tackles for a loss.

After his amazing junior season, Patrick decided to enter the 2020 NFL draft instead of playing his senior year.
