Pattan Kalan is a town in Pakistan. It is one of the 51 local government areas in the Abbottabad District. This area is part of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.
In 2005, a big earthquake affected this region. After the earthquake, 27 small camps were set up in the area to help people.

Where is Pattan Kalan?
Pattan Kalan is on the eastern side of the Abbottabad District. It is close to the border between Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and the Muzaffarabad District of Kashmir.
It also shares borders with other local areas in the Abbottabad District:
- To the north: Kukmang and Boi
- To the west: Thandiani and Kuthwal
- To the south: Beerangali and Nambal
The village is about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Abbottabad. It sits high up, about 7,000 feet (2,134 meters) above sea level. You can reach it by taking the Abbottabad-Muzaffarabad road.
Nature and Wildlife
Pattan Kalan is a mountainous area. It is the largest village in the Galyat/Bakote region. Much of the hilly countryside is covered with trees.

You can find many types of trees here. These include evergreens like pine, as well as walnut, oak, and maple trees.
The highest point in the Abbottabad District is Thandiani. This is a popular place for tourists. It is located very close to Pattan Kalan.
Animals You Might See
The local wildlife includes leopards and monkeys. You might also spot pheasants and flying squirrels. Pine martens are also found here, but they are very rare to see.
Who Lives in Pattan Kalan?
Most of the people in Pattan Kalan are Muslims. Many residents belong to one of three main groups. These groups are the Qureshi (Damaal), Gujjar, and Abbasi tribes. Most people in the region speak a language called Hindko.
How People Live and Work
Farming is the main way people make a living in Pattan Kalan. In some remote areas, farmers still use oxen to work the land. In the villages, machinery is also used for farming.

The main crops grown in winter (called rabi crops) are potatoes and maize. Wheat is the only crop grown in summer (called kharif crop). Only a small part of the village land is used for wheat. This wheat is mostly used to feed cattle and for its grain.
Other vegetables grown here include turnips, radishes, peas, and pumpkins. Farmers also grow beans and mustard. Many fruits grow in Pattan Kalan too. These include pears, apples, and black grapes. You can also find figs, peaches, and damson plums. Mulberries, wild figs, lemons, apricots, and cherries are also grown.
Homes and Fuel
Wood is the main source of fuel for heating and cooking. It is also used to build homes. Gas cylinders are sometimes used for fuel, but not very often.
Weather in Pattan Kalan
Winters in Pattan Kalan are very cold. They last for a long time, from October all the way to April. During the summer months, the temperature gets warmer. The hottest months are May and June, when temperatures can reach 25–30 degrees Celsius (77–86 degrees Fahrenheit). The monsoon season, which brings a lot of rain, lasts from mid-July to mid-August.
