Thandiani is a beautiful hill station in the Galyat area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan. Its name means "very cold," which perfectly describes its cool climate. Thandiani is located in the northeast part of Abbottabad District. It is about 37.5 kilometers (23 miles) from Abbottabad city.

This lovely spot sits in the foothills of the mighty Himalayas. To the east, across the Kunhar River, you can see the snow-covered Pir Panjal mountains of Kashmir. Looking north and northeast, you'll spot the mountains of Kohistan and Kaghan. To the northwest are the snowy ranges of Swat and Chitral. The hills of Thandiani are quite high, reaching about 2,750 meters (9,022 feet) above sea level. Many different groups of people live here, including the Qureshi-Damal, Karlal, Syed, Awan, Abbasi, and Gujjar tribes.

History of Thandiani

Thandiani was first leased to members of the Battye family during British India times. They were Christian missionaries and also worked in civil and military services. Later, the Battye family gave this land to the church.

During the British Raj (British rule), a sanatorium (a place for rest and recovery) and other buildings were set up here. These facilities were mainly for missionaries, church staff, and officers from the nearby military base in Abbottabad. Thandiani also had some private European homes, a camping area, a small market, and a little church called St. Xavier in the Wilderness. These places were only used during the warm summer months.
