Pavis Wood is a beautiful area of trees and nature located in Hertfordshire, England. It's near a village called Hastoe in Tring. This special woodland is home to the highest point in the entire county of Hertfordshire, reaching about 244 meters (801 feet) high!

Pavis Wood is considered an ancient woodland. This means it has been covered by trees for a very long time, at least since the year 1600. These old woodlands are important for many plants and animals.

Exploring Pavis Wood

Pavis Wood is a great place to visit. You can explore it all year round. A special path called a bridleway goes through the wood. A bridleway is a path that people can use for walking, cycling, or even riding horses.

Another famous path, the Ridgeway National Trail, also runs nearby. This trail is one of Britain's oldest roads. It has been used for thousands of years.

Trees and Plants You'll Find

Pavis Wood is full of different kinds of trees. The most common ones are:

  • Beech trees (Fagus sylvatica)
  • Oak trees (Quercus robur)
  • Ash trees (European ash)

You can also spot some interesting smaller plants here. Two examples are the yellow pimpernel and wood melick. The yellow pimpernel has bright yellow, star-shaped flowers. Wood melick is a type of grass that grows in shady woodland areas.

The Highest Point

The very top part of Pavis Wood is a flat area. It is not marked with a sign or monument, so it can be a bit tricky to find the exact highest spot.

Pavis Wood is quite close to the border of Buckinghamshire. This county also has its own highest point, called Haddington Hill, which is about 267 meters (876 feet) high. Pavis Wood and Haddington Hill are connected by a high ridge of land. This connection means Pavis Wood only rises about 5 meters (16 feet) higher than the land immediately around it. This small difference in height is called its topographic prominence.
