Payneham is a suburb located east of Adelaide, a big city in South Australia. It is part of the City of Norwood Payneham St Peters. This area is special because many people here have Italian-Australian and French-Australian backgrounds. Their families often moved here after World War II.

Payneham's northern edge is Payneham Road. Portrush Road also runs through the middle of the suburb.

History of Payneham

Payneham got its name from Samuel Payne. He arrived in Australia in 1838 with his family. In 1839, he settled in the area.

The Payneham Post Office first opened on July 18, 1850. It was later renamed Marden in 1968.

Who was Samuel Payne?

Samuel Payne lived in a house called Payneham House on Rosella Street. His family later moved to East Terrace in Adelaide. However, they kept their home on Rosella Street.

Samuel Payne traveled to Australia on the Lord Goderich ship. On the same ship was Edward Castres Gwynne, who would become his neighbor.

Payne started one of the first pubs in South Australia. It was first called the Australian Arms. The name changed several times over the years. It was known as the Exchange Hotel when it was taken down in 1960.

Samuel Payne passed away in 1847 from the flu. He had just retired from running his pub. He left behind his wife and seven children.

Who was Harold Holt?

Harold Holt was a former prime minister of Australia. He lived in Payneham for several years when he was a child.

His father, Thomas James, managed a hotel called the Duke of Wellington. This was from 1914 to 1916. The hotel was at the corner of Payneham Road and Wellington Road. This road is now called Portrush Road. The hotel was demolished in 1976. An ice skating rink was built there instead.

Harold Holt went to Payneham Primary School. He lived at the hotel with his parents.

Who was Henry Sewell?

Henry Sewell (1847–1926) owned a very well-known plant nursery in the area. In 1902, a newspaper called The Chronicle said it was the 'largest nursery in Australia'.

A famous plant expert from London, Peter Barr, praised Sewell's plant collection. He said Sewell knew more about plants than anyone else in the southern part of the world.

Sewell's home was built in the early 1890s. It is still standing today and is used as offices for businesses. Sewell Avenue in Payneham was named after him.

Australian Rules Football

Payneham is home to the Payneham Norwood Union Football Club. They play in the Adelaide Footy League. The club is located at Payneham Oval. This oval is on John Street and Rosella Street.

The club was formed in 1995. This happened when two clubs, the Payneham Football Club and the Norwood Union Football Club, joined together.

As of 2023, the club has 23 junior teams. This includes 3 junior girls' teams. They also have 5 senior teams, including 2 senior women's teams.

Tennis

The East Adelaide Payneham Tennis Club is also at Payneham Oval. It is right next to the football club.

The club has 6 tennis courts. These courts have lights for night games. They were updated in 2021.

Cricket

The Payneham Cricket Club is also located at Payneham Oval. It was started in 1899. It was one of the first clubs to join the Adelaide Turf Cricket Association.

The club has teams for both senior men and women. They also have teams for junior boys and girls.

Soccer (Association Football)

The Payneham Postel Lions Soccer Club plays in the South Australian Amateur Soccer League.

The club was first called Payneham Postel United. It was started by postal and telecom workers. Later, it joined with Para Hills Lions. Now, the club plays at LJ Lewis Oval in Northfield.

Table Tennis

The Payneham Table Tennis Academy Inc is located on Sullivan Street in Firle. It moved there around 1964. Before that, it played in different church and community halls.
