The Peckoltia sabaji is a type of catfish that lives in freshwater. It belongs to a fish family called Loricariidae, which are often known as "armored catfish" because they have bony plates on their bodies. This fish is found in South America.

You can find Peckoltia sabaji in several river systems. These include the Rupununi, Essequibo River, and Takutu River in Guyana. It also lives in the Casiquiare canal, the Rio Negro, the Cinaruco River, and the Orinoco in Venezuela. This fish usually likes to live among big rocks in medium to large rivers. It can grow to be about 19.8 centimeters (7.8 inches) long.

What's in a Name?

Scientists sometimes change their minds about how to classify animals as they learn more. The Peckoltia sabaji is a good example of this!

  • First Name: In 2003, a scientist named Jonathan W. Armbruster first described this fish. He placed it in the group (or genus) called Peckoltia.
  • A Change: Later, in 2008, after studying the Peckoltia group more closely, Armbruster moved the fish to a different group called Hemiancistrus. So, for a while, it was known as Hemiancistrus sabaji. Some places, like FishBase, still use this name.
  • Back Again: In 2015, Armbruster and other scientists decided that P. sabaji should move back to the Peckoltia group. More studies that same year confirmed this.
  • Other Ideas: People have also thought this fish might belong to other groups like Ancistrus or Ancistomus. The name Ancistomus was sometimes used by people who sell fish for aquariums, but it wasn't quite right. Some even wondered if it was a completely new, unnamed group!

Today, the name Peckoltia sabaji is the one most scientists agree on. This includes Jonathan Armbruster himself and the ITIS, which is a big database of species names.
