A Look at Pelton Fell's Past
Pelton Fell has an interesting history, especially linked to its mining past.
Early Buildings
In 1889, a building called the Miner's Institute was built in Pelton Fell. This was a place for miners to meet and learn. It was made even bigger in 1909.
Modern Changes
Starting in 2004, the local council, Durham County Council, began to update the village. Many older council houses were taken down. Some private houses were also removed. In their place, new, modern homes were built. These new homes included both social housing (homes rented at lower prices by the council) and private houses.
Where is Pelton Fell?
Pelton Fell is found in the north-west part of County Durham. It is located to the west of a larger town called Chester-le-Street.
Old Coal Mine and Railway
The village used to be the site of a coal mine. Coal mining was a very important industry in this area. There was also a railway station nearby. This station served both Pelton Fell and another village called Pelton. Today, the coal mine and the railway station are closed. Only small signs of them can still be seen.

Past Meeting Places
Two old meeting places, the Pelton Fell working men's club and the Colliery Inn, were closed down. They were both taken down in 2008 and earlier. To the north of the village, there is a small area called Stella Gill. This area was set up in the late 1980s. It provides places for small new businesses to start.
Housing and Green Spaces
A large part of Pelton Fell has houses built before and after the Second World War. Many of these were council housing (homes owned by the local council). Some people have bought their council homes through a scheme called Right to Buy.
The village is divided into two parts by a wooded area known as "The Battery." A small stream called the Twizell Burn flows nearby. On the northern side, along Station Lane, is Pelton Fell Memorial Park. This park has a war memorial, tennis courts, a play area for children, and a bowling green.
Sports in the Village
Pelton Fell Football Club is located just off Station Lane. It is on the opposite side of the road from the Memorial Park.
