History of Pendergrass
The town of Pendergrass officially became a city on December 30, 1890. This happened when the Georgia Legislature passed a special law, or "charter," for it. The community got its name from a local doctor, J. B. Pendergrass.
Geography and Location
Pendergrass is in the northwestern part of Jackson County. Its exact location is 34°9′51″N 83°40′52″W / 34.16417°N 83.68111°W.
The city is close to other towns. To its southeast is Jefferson, which is the main city of Jackson County. To the northwest, you'll find Talmo. A major road, U.S. Route 129, runs near Pendergrass. This road can take you about 14 miles (22 km) northwest to Gainesville. If you head southeast through Jefferson, it's about 24 miles (39 km) to Athens.
Pendergrass covers a total area of about 3.43 square miles (8.88 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. A small part, about 0.04 square miles (0.12 square kilometers), is water. The city is part of the Middle Oconee River area, meaning its water flows into that river system.
