Pere Ardiaca i Martí (born in Balaguer, Lleida Province in 1909 – died in Moscow on November 5, 1986) was a Catalan politician from Spain. He was a communist leader. In 1982, he helped start a new political group called the Party of the Communists of Catalonia (PCC). He was the president of this party until he passed away.

Biography

Early Life and Political Beginnings

Pere Ardiaca moved to Barcelona in 1926. He worked there as a painter decorator. In 1929, he had to move to France because he did not want to join the military. While in France, he joined the French Communist Party (PCF) in a town called Béziers. Later, he was chosen to represent a local committee in Nîmes.

When the Second Spanish Republic was declared, he returned to Spain. He went back to his hometown of Balaguer. There, he joined a group called the Bloc Obrer i Camperol. In 1933, he left this group. He then joined the Communist Party of Catalonia. Just one year later, he became the Political Secretary of this party. However, this role was short-lived. After some events in October 1934, he joined the International Red Aid party.

During the Spanish Civil War

In 1936, the Spanish Civil War began. Pere Ardiaca became part of the Executive Committee for the Unified Socialist Party of Catalonia (PSUC). He was also put in charge of a magazine called Treball. In 1937, he managed the propaganda for the eastern army commission. When the Spanish Civil War ended, he had to leave the country. He traveled first to France. Then, he went to Spanish colonies in the Caribbean, including the Dominican Republic and Cuba.

Later Political Career and Legacy

Pere Ardiaca returned to Spain in 1948. He rejoined the PSUC. In 1960, he was chosen as a member of the Central Committee. Around 1960, he moved back to Barcelona. He became active again with the Treball magazine, which he had worked on many years before. In 1962, he faced difficulties and was imprisoned for a time. He was released in 1971.

After the death of General Franco, Pere Ardiaca ran in the first elections for the Parliament of Catalonia. He was chosen as a representative for Lleida. In January 1981, he became President of the PSUC at their 5th Congress. However, he was later removed from the party in December of that year. Along with other leaders, he then helped create the Party of the Communists of Catalonia in 1982. He served as its president until his death.

In his final years, he spent time in Russia. He passed away in Moscow, USSR, on November 5, 1986.
