History of Perryville
Perryville was chosen as the county seat for Perry County. Three men, Robert T. Brown, Joseph Tucker, and Thomas Riney, made this decision. In 1821, a man named Bernard Layton gave 51 acres of land for the new town. In return, he received one town lot.
The town sold 53 of its 99 lots for about $1,486. This money was used to build the first courthouse. The courthouse you see today is the third one built in Perryville. It was finished in 1904 and cost $30,000. Perryville and Perry County were named after Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry. He was a naval hero from the War of 1812.
One of the first stores in Perryville was a log building. It was built by Jean Ferdinand Rozier. An old two-story brick building from 1830 still stands. Its top floor was the first town hall. Perryville officially became a town in 1837. However, this first incorporation did not last.
As the town grew, more businesses opened. The Hoose Hotel was built in 1843. People often called it the "white house." It was an important building for early trade. The Hoose Hotel was used as a hotel, a place to make beer, and an auction site.
In 1856, the town was officially incorporated again. By 1874, Perryville had its first fire engine. It became a "Fourth Class City" in 1879. Charles A. Weber was elected as its first mayor the next year. The town became more successful when the Chester, Perryville and Ste. Genevieve Railway was built.
Because it was the county seat and in a central spot, Perryville grew. It became the main place for shopping and services in Perry County. The number of people living there increased. Telephone service started in 1893.
