Peteroa: A Place of History
Peteroa is not just a town; it's also the name of a historic spot where an important fortress once stood. This fortress was built by a famous Mapuche leader named Lautaro. He was a brave warrior who fought against the Spanish during the 1500s.
Lautaro's Fortress
In 1556, Lautaro built a strong fortress at a place he called Peteroa. This fortress was important because it was a key spot for his forces. It was located near the Teno River, not too far from the city of Santiago.
The Battle of Peteroa
The fortress at Peteroa was the site of a major battle. This battle was part of the long conflict between the Mapuche people and the Spanish. It showed Lautaro's skill as a military leader.
Clearing Up the Confusion
For a long time, people were a bit confused about two important places: Peteroa and Mataquito.
- Peteroa was where Lautaro built his fortress in 1556.
- Mataquito was the place along the Mataquito River where Lautaro was sadly killed in 1557 during the Battle of Mataquito.
Some old records from soldiers like Alonso Lopez de la Raigada help us understand that Peteroa and Mataquito were indeed different places. Even though some historians didn't always name the exact locations, later accounts helped to separate these two important sites.
Peteroa and the Rivers
Peteroa is also known for its connection to several rivers. In the 1700s, it was described as the place where the Teno River, Pumaiten River, and Lontué River all meet. When these three rivers come together, they form the larger Mataquito River.
Today, the town of Peteroa is believed to be very close to where Lautaro's historic fortress once stood on the south bank of the Mataquito River. His second camp, where he was eventually killed, was likely across the river on its north bank.
