Philbrook is a small, unincorporated community located in Todd County, Minnesota, United States. An unincorporated community is a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.
You can find Philbrook along Todd County Road 28, close to Red Pine Road. Some nearby towns include Staples, Motley, Cushing, and Browerville.
A Look Back: Philbrook's History
Philbrook started out with a different name. In 1859, it was known as Riverside. A post office was set up there in 1889. However, there was already another post office in Minnesota named Riverside.
Because of this, the community's name was changed to Philbrook in 1890. The post office continued to serve the area for many years. In 1956, it became a rural branch, and it was finally closed down in 1964.
Philbrook also had a train station for the Northern Pacific Railroad. A local church, Saint James Catholic Church, was part of the community until it closed in 1962.
Travel and Transportation
Even though Philbrook is a small community, a famous train route passes right through it. The Empire Builder train, run by Amtrak, travels on BNSF tracks through Philbrook. This train connects major cities like Seattle and Portland on the west coast to Chicago in the Midwest.
However, the Empire Builder does not stop in Philbrook. If you wanted to catch this train, the nearest station is about 7 miles (11 km) away in Staples.
