Early Life and Education
Philip May was born in Norwich, England, in 1957. His father sold shoes, and his mother taught French. Philip grew up on the Wirral and went to school at Calday Grange Grammar School.
He later studied history at Lincoln College, Oxford, which is part of the famous University of Oxford. While there, he became the President of the Oxford Union in 1979. The Oxford Union is a well-known debating society at the university.
Working in Finance
After finishing university, Philip May started a career in finance. This means he worked with money and investments.
In 2005, he joined a company called Capital Group. His job there was to make sure clients were happy and that the company understood their financial goals. Before this, he worked for other financial companies, helping to manage money for different groups.
People who worked with him said he was a quiet person who focused on his work. He was not someone who liked to show off. When his wife, Theresa May, became a leading candidate for Prime Minister, his company explained that he did not make decisions about how money was invested. His role was more about looking after clients.
Involvement in Politics
Philip May has always been interested in politics. He was once the leader of a local Conservative Party group in Wimbledon. However, he decided to focus more on his finance career.
Even so, he remained a strong supporter of the Conservative Party. Many people called him an "experienced Conservative activist." He was often seen as his wife's most trusted advisor, even though he did not have an official role. For example, she talked to him before deciding to call a "snap election" in 2017. A snap election is an early election called before it is legally required.
He also helped his wife by talking to voters in her local area, Maidenhead.
In July 2017, Philip May made his first official trip as the British Prime Minister's spouse. He went to the G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany. The G20 is a meeting of leaders from the world's largest economies. There, he attended events with the spouses of other world leaders.
In 2019, it was reported that he encouraged his wife to make changes to the Brexit withdrawal agreement. This was to try and get the agreement approved by Parliament.
In July 2020, Philip May was made a Knight Bachelor. This means he can use the title "Sir." He officially received this honor in October 2021.
Personal Life
Philip May met his future wife, Theresa Brasier, when they were both students at Oxford University. They were introduced at a student event for the Conservative Party. They both loved cricket, which helped them become closer. They got married on September 6, 1980.
As the spouse of the Prime Minister, Philip May usually avoided giving interviews. However, he did appear with his wife on a TV show called The One Show before the 2017 general election.
During this interview, Theresa May shared that she and Philip were sad they could not have children due to health reasons. Philip May also joked about their home life, saying he was in charge of taking out the bins. He also said that if someone expected dinner on the table every night at six o'clock, they might be disappointed being married to the Prime Minister. He added that being married to the Prime Minister was a privilege.
