Early Life and Education
Philip May was born in Norwich, England, in 1957. His father worked as a sales representative for a shoe company. His mother was a French teacher. Philip grew up on the Wirral, a peninsula in northwest England.
He attended school in Heswall and later Calday Grange Grammar School in West Kirby. Philip then went on to study history at Lincoln College, which is part of the Oxford University. While at Oxford, he was chosen to be the President of the Oxford Union in 1979. This is a famous debating society at the university.
Career in Finance
After finishing his studies at Oxford University, Philip May began a career in finance. This means he worked with money and investments. In 2005, he joined a company called Capital Group. His job there was to manage relationships with clients.
Before that, he worked as a fund manager for other financial companies. A fund manager helps people invest their money. Philip's work mainly focused on helping pension funds and insurance companies. These are large organizations that manage money for many people.
One of his colleagues described him as a quiet person at work. They said he was not like the typical investment manager who might have a big ego. When his wife, Theresa May, became a leading candidate for Prime Minister, his employer made a statement. They clarified that Philip was not in charge of making investment decisions. His role was to make sure clients were happy with the service they received.
Involvement in Politics
Philip May has always been a strong supporter of the Conservative Party. He was even chairman of the Conservative Party association in Wimbledon for a short time. However, he decided to focus more on his career in finance.
Even though he didn't hold official political roles, he was seen as a very active Conservative supporter. Many people called him an "experienced Conservative activist." He did not attend official meetings to advise the Prime Minister. However, some people believed he was his wife's most trusted adviser. For example, she consulted him before deciding to call a snap general election in 2017. He also helped voters in his wife's local area of Maidenhead.
In July 2017, Philip May made his first official trip as the British Prime Minister's spouse. This was at the G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany. During this visit, he attended special events and went on boat trips with the spouses of other world leaders.
In July 2020, Philip May was given the title of Knight. This is an honor given by the King for important contributions. He officially received this honor in October 2021.
Personal Life
Philip May and his future wife, Theresa Brasier, met when they were students at Oxford University. They were introduced by Benazir Bhutto at a student event for the Conservative Party. Theresa has said that Malcolm Turnbull, who later became Prime Minister of Australia, encouraged Philip to propose to her.
They both shared a love for cricket. They got married on September 6, 1980. Theresa's father, Hubert Brasier, performed the wedding ceremony.
As the husband of the Prime Minister, Philip May generally avoided giving interviews. He also did not make many public statements. However, he did appear with his wife for an interview on the BBC One show The One Show before the 2017 general election. During this interview, Theresa May shared that she and Philip were sad they could not have children due to health reasons. Philip also joked about who takes out the bins at home, saying he does "the traditional boy jobs." He also mentioned that being married to the Prime Minister was a privilege. He said that if someone expected dinner on the table every evening, they might be disappointed.
