Piccolo Summit is a mountain peak in the Fitzsimmons Range. This range is part of the larger Garibaldi Ranges in southwestern British Columbia, Canada. It is located near Whistler town.

You can find Piccolo Summit on the north side of Cheakamus Lake. It is also inside the beautiful Garibaldi Provincial Park. This mountain is the highest point in a group of hills known as the Musical Bumps.

A Mountain with a Volcanic Past

Piccolo Summit has an interesting secret: it was once part of a volcano! In 2004, a scientist named Jack Souther studied the mountain. He is a volcanologist, which means he studies volcanoes.

Jack Souther worked for the Geological Survey of Canada. He discovered that Piccolo Summit is made of old lava flows. These lava flows came from a volcano that erupted about 100 million years ago.

When Did This Happen?

This volcanic activity happened during a time called the Late Cretaceous period. That was a very long time ago, when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth!

Other nearby mountains also have volcanic connections. For example, Whistler Mountain is also made of ancient lava flows. Flute Summit, another nearby peak, was formed from magma that cooled underground. This happened during the same ancient time period.
