Pick Up Stix is a popular American restaurant chain. It's known for serving fresh Asian cuisine, especially Chinese-American cuisine. You can find these restaurants mainly in Southern California.
Pick Up Stix offers different ways to enjoy their food. You can eat inside the restaurant, pick up your order to take home, or even have them cater for events. They also provide meals for some private schools. The company is owned by Mandarin Holdings.
A cool fact about Pick Up Stix is how they cook their food. Everything is made fresh when you order it. They use special high-heat burners and traditional woks. In 2008, San Diego Magazine named Pick Up Stix one of the best takeout restaurants in San Diego.
The Story of Pick Up Stix
Pick Up Stix was started by a man named Charlie Zhang. He moved to the United States in 1982. When he arrived, he had only $20 in his pocket.
Charlie had a great idea. He wanted to take traditional Asian food and make it a bit different for American tastes. He used less oil and added things like wine, vinegar, and soy sauce.
The very first Pick Up Stix restaurant opened in Rancho Santa Margarita, California, in 1989. It quickly became popular! By 1992, there were two more locations in Orange County. These were in Irvine and Laguna Niguel.
Just two years later, the chain grew even more. It expanded into San Diego County. New restaurants opened in Del Mar, Carlsbad, and San Diego.
In 2001, a company called Carlson Companies bought Pick Up Stix. Charlie Zhang continued to lead the company until he retired in 2003. Later, in 2010, Carlson Companies sold Pick Up Stix to Mandarin Holdings. Today, there are over 70 Pick Up Stix locations across the United States.
Restaurant Changes Over Time
Like many businesses, Pick Up Stix has made some changes over the years. In early 2008, about 26 locations closed down. These were in California, Nevada, and Arizona. The company wanted to focus on its busiest and most successful restaurants.
By 2010, all the locations in Nevada and Arizona had closed. However, Pick Up Stix still wanted customers in those states to enjoy their food. They encouraged people to visit the California restaurants.
Interestingly, in late 2012, a Pick Up Stix restaurant opened again in Las Vegas. It was part of a big renovation at the Excalibur Hotel and Casino. This new location replaced another Asian food restaurant. More recently, in 2022, the very first Pick Up Stix location in Rancho Santa Margarita closed its doors.
