Piedmont is a city located in the northwestern part of Wayne County in Southeast Missouri, United States. In 2020, about 1,897 people lived there.
Piedmont is part of the Ozark Foothills Region. It sits where two main roads, State Highways 34 and 49, meet. The name "Piedmont" comes from French words meaning "foot of the mountain." This is because the city is located at the base of Clark Mountain, which is about two miles north of town.

History of Piedmont
Piedmont was officially planned and laid out in 1871. This happened when the Iron Mountain Railroad built its tracks further south to this spot. The name "Piedmont" comes from the French words pied (meaning "foot") and mont (meaning "mountain"). A post office opened in Piedmont in 1872.
Geography of Piedmont
Piedmont covers a total area of about 2.15 square miles (5.53 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with only a tiny part being water.
A neighborhood called Beckville is also part of Piedmont.
Near Piedmont, you'll find Clearwater Lake. This lake was built in the 1940s to help control floods. It's managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The lake brings many visitors to Piedmont, especially in the warmer months, for fun activities like boating, fishing, and camping.

In 2010, there were 1,977 people living in Piedmont. Most residents were White (96.5%). Smaller groups included African American, Native American, and Asian people. About 1.4% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.

Piedmont is known for its two nearby drive-in movie theaters: the Pine Hill Drive-In and the 21 Drive-In.
Since 1977, Piedmont has hosted the Ozark Heritage Fall Festival every October. This festival celebrates traditional Ozark culture and handmade crafts. It's one of the most popular festivals in the region.
In August 2023, something very interesting happened! The state of Missouri officially named Piedmont and Wayne County the "UFO Capitals of Missouri." This was to celebrate the 50th anniversary of many people reporting UFO sightings in the area.
Between February and April 1973, many residents saw strange things in the sky. Hundreds of calls were made to police and newspapers. These sightings became big news, first locally, then across the country. Today, Piedmont celebrates this special designation with its annual UFO Festival every April.

- Robert Banks: He was an award-winning chemist. He helped invent important plastics like "crystalline polypropylene" and high-density polyethylene (HDPE).
