Pinckney is a small town located in Lewis County, New York, in the United States. In 2010, about 329 people lived there. The town gets its name from Thomas Pinckney, a famous person from South Carolina.
Pinckney is found on the western edge of Lewis County. It is also southeast of the city of Watertown.
Pinckney's History
The first settlers arrived in the area around 1804. The town of Pinckney was officially created in 1808. It was formed from parts of two other towns: Harrisburgh and Rodman. Rodman was known as "Harrison" back then and was in Jefferson County.
Early on, most people in Pinckney were farmers. Because of the snowy weather, many later switched to raising dairy cows and making cheese.
Pinckney's Geography
Pinckney covers a total area of about 41.1 square miles (106.49 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 41.0 square miles (106.12 square kilometers), is land. Only a small part, about 0.1 square miles (0.37 square kilometers), is water.
The western side of Pinckney is almost completely surrounded by Jefferson County. New York State Route 177 is a main road that runs east to west through the town. The Deer River also flows north through the southeastern part of Pinckney.
