The Pine Mountain Range is a long, low mountain ridge in Georgia, USA. It stretches across three counties: Meriwether, Harris, and Talbot. This range is special because it holds the highest points in all three of these west Georgia counties!

Discovering the Pine Mountain Range

The Pine Mountain Range is part of a bigger land area called the Pine Mountain Terrane. This terrane is a unique geological feature that even goes into eastern Alabama. The ridge in Georgia reaches over 1,100 feet (about 335 meters) high for about 20 miles (32 kilometers). These are some of the highest spots found so far south in the eastern United States! It's important to know that the Pine Mountain Terrane is different from the Appalachian Mountains, which end further north in Georgia.

Where is Pine Mountain?

The Pine Mountain Range starts near Lake Harding. From there, it runs northeast through Harris County. You can drive across the ridge using roads like U.S. Route 27 and Georgia State Routes 190 and 354. These roads are located south and east of the town of Pine Mountain.

The ridge then follows the border between Harris and Meriwether Counties. This is where you'll find the highest point on the range, called Dowdell's Knob.

A Special Place for a President

Dowdell's Knob holds a cool piece of history! President Franklin D. Roosevelt loved to visit Warm Springs, which is nearby. He had a special brick oven and picnic area built at Dowdell's Knob. He used this spot during his many visits to the area.

After passing Dowdell's Knob, the ridge continues along the border between Talbot and Meriwether Counties, south of Manchester. At its very eastern end, the Pine Mountain Ridge meets the Flint River. This meeting creates the steep cliffs you can see at Sprewell Bluff State Park.

Nature's Playground: F.D. Roosevelt State Park

You'll find F.D. Roosevelt State Park along the Pine Mountain ridge in northern Harris County. This park is the largest state park in all of Georgia! It's a great place for hiking, camping, and exploring the beautiful nature of the Pine Mountain Range.
