U.S. Route 27 (US 27) is a major highway in Georgia. It stretches for about 356-mile (573 km). This road runs from south to north, staying close to the Alabama state line. It's a key part of a route connecting Tallahassee, Florida to Chattanooga, Tennessee. In Georgia, US 27 is also known as State Route 1 (SR 1). It is also called the Martha Berry Highway. This highway connects many important towns. These include Bainbridge, Columbus, LaGrange, and Rome.

Exploring the Route of US 27 in Georgia

US 27 begins at the Florida state line. Here, it enters Decatur County. The road is a four-lane divided highway. It goes past Attapulgus and heads towards Bainbridge.

Journey Through Southwest Georgia

South of Bainbridge, US 27 joins US 84 and SR 38. They form a bypass around the city. Then, US 27 turns northwest into Miller County. It passes through Colquitt. Next, it enters Early County and goes through Blakely.

The highway then heads north through Bluffton in Clay County. It reaches Cuthbert in Randolph County. US 27 goes around the east side of Cuthbert. Its next stop is Lumpkin in Stewart County.

Reaching Columbus and Beyond

Continuing north, the highway arrives at Cusseta in Chattahoochee County. Here, it joins US 280 and SR 520. These highways travel together into Columbus in Muscogee County. They cross I-185.

US 27 then separates from US 280/SR 520. It heads north through downtown Columbus. It crosses I-185 again. It also crosses US 80 before entering Harris County.

Northward to Tennessee

US 27 generally runs parallel to I-185 as it goes north through Harris County. It crosses I-185 one more time in Troup County. It also crosses I-85 near LaGrange.

The highway continues north through Heard County. It goes through the center of Carrollton in Carroll County. Turning northwest, it crosses I-20 south of Bremen.

US 27 then heads north through Haralson County into Polk County. It passes through the eastern part of Cedartown. In Floyd County, US 27 becomes a controlled-access highway for a short time. It has exits for local roads.

It continues through Rome as Turner McCall Blvd. and Martha Berry Blvd. The highway then turns west towards Chattooga County and Summerville. In Summerville, it turns sharply north again. It travels through LaFayette in Walker County. Here, US 27 becomes LaFayette Road. It crosses between Walker County and Catoosa County twice. Finally, it reaches its northern end at the Tennessee state line in Rossville.

Important Sections of US 27

Some parts of US 27/SR 1 are part of the National Highway System. This system includes roads that are very important for the country's economy, travel, and defense. These important sections include:

  • From the Florida state line to the south end of the Attapulgus business route.
  • From the north end of the Attapulgus business route to the south end of the Blakely business route.
  • From the north end of the Blakely business route to the interchange with US 80 in Columbus.
  • From I-185 near LaGrange to the south end of the Bremen business route.
  • From the north end of the Bremen business route to the south end of the Buchanan business route.
  • From the north end of the Buchanan business route to the Tennessee state line.

The History of US 27 in Georgia

The road that is now US 27 has a long history. It started as State Route 1 (SR 1) way back in 1919.

Early Days: 1920s to 1950s

When SR 1 was first created, its path was a bit different. Over the years, small changes were made. For example, by 1921, its southern end moved a little west. The route between Colquitt and Cuthbert also shifted west.

In 1934, US 27 was officially added to the entire length of SR 1. By 1939, the southern part of US 27/SR 1 was fully built. Between 1945 and 1946, a section near Rome was changed. Later, in 1954-1955, it went back to its original path.

Changes in the 1960s

The 1960s brought more changes. Plans were made for new bypasses around towns like Summerville and Carrollton. A bypass is a road that goes around a city. This helps traffic move more smoothly.

In Columbus, a new freeway was being built. This freeway later became part of I-185. In 1965, US 27 in Bainbridge was moved onto a new bypass. This new road helped traffic avoid the city center.

Modern Updates: 1970s to 2000s

In the 1970s, parts of US 27 were shifted to new bypasses. For example, in 1972, it moved to a bypass around Cusseta. In 1975, the freeway in Columbus became I-185. US 27 went back to its old path through the city.

More bypasses were planned and built in the 1980s and 1990s. These included bypasses for LaFayette, Cedartown, and Bremen. In 1993, US 27 in Blakely was moved to a new eastern bypass. The same happened in Cuthbert in 1994. In 2001, US 27 was shifted again near the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park.

Special Names for US 27 Sections

Over the years, different parts of US 27 and SR 1 have been given special names to honor people or historical events. These names are decided by the Georgia government.

  • In 1935, the section from Columbus north to Tennessee was named the "Tennessee-Columbus Military Highway."
  • In 1941, the southern part of the highway, from its start to Colquitt, was called the "De Soto Trail Highway." This honors the explorer Hernando de Soto.
  • In 1952, the entire US 27 Bus/SR 1 was named the "Martha Berry Highway." This honors Martha Berry, who was a leader in education.
  • In 1992, a part of the highway near Columbus was named the "Robert B. Nett Medal of Honor Highway." This honors a hero from World War II.
  • In 1993, the Cedartown bypass was named "Syble W. Brannan Parkway."
  • In 1994, a section between Summerville and Trion was named "Ralph 'Country' Brown Highway Designation." This honors a local baseball player.
  • In 2000, the Cuthbert bypass was named "Gerald Green Bypass."
  • In 2011, the entire US 27 Bus/SR 1 was named "Scenic Hometown Highway." This was done to help tourism. Also in 2011, a section near Chickamauga was named "Roy Parrish Parkway."
