History of Rossville
A post office has been open in Rossville since 1817. The city is named after Cherokee Chief John Ross. He lived here before his people were forced to move to Oklahoma. This difficult journey is known as the Trail of Tears. The city officially became a city in 1905.
The John Ross House is a historic log cabin in Rossville. It was named a National Historic Landmark in 1973. This means it is a very important place in American history.
Geography and Location
Rossville is a suburb of Chattanooga, Tennessee. The state line between Tennessee and Georgia separates the two cities. The city sits in a wide valley. To the east is Missionary Ridge, and to the west is Lookout Mountain.
Fort Oglethorpe and the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park are located southeast of Rossville. They are just across Missionary Ridge. U.S. Route 27 is a main road that connects Rossville to Chattanooga and Fort Oglethorpe. The city covers about 1.8 square miles (4.68 square kilometers) of land.
