A famous expert in Sacred Harp music, Hugh McGraw, lived in Bremen. The Sacred Harp Publishing Company, which he led, is nearby in Carrollton.

The Holly Springs Primitive Baptist Church in Bremen hosts two Sacred Harp singing events each year. One is a two-day convention in June. The other is an all-day singing in November.

Who Lived Here First?

Before the 1700s, the area where Bremen is now was home to Native American groups. These groups were part of the Creek Confederacy. The Creek Nation, also called the Muskogee, was the main tribe in this alliance.

The Creek people believe their ancestors moved to the southeastern United States from the Southwest. The Confederacy was likely formed to protect themselves from other large groups to the north. The name "Creek" came from the English shortening "Ocheese Creek" Indians. This name was given to people living along the Ocheese Creek (now the Ocmulgee River). Over time, the name "Creek" was used for all groups in the Confederacy.
