Pinehurst is a small, unincorporated community in Jackson County, Oregon, United States. It's located about 25 miles (40 km) southeast of Ashland along Oregon Route 66. You can find Pinehurst near Jenny Creek, between the Siskiyou Mountains and the lower hills of the Cascade Range.

A Look Back: Pinehurst History
Pinehurst was once a busy stop along an old road that connected the Rogue Valley and the Klamath Basin. This road was used by stagecoaches and wagons carrying goods. It was also part of the original Applegate Trail, a path pioneers took.
What's in a Name?
The name "Pinehurst" comes from two words: "pine" and the Old English word hurst, which means "woods." So, Pinehurst means "pine woods," which makes sense because it's located in an area with many Ponderosa Pine trees.
Post Office and Early Life
The area had a post office called "Pioneer" back in 1878, but it closed a few years later. Then, in 1911, a nearby post office named "Shake" moved and changed its name to "Pinehurst." In 1915, Pinehurst was home to about 20 people and had its own public school.
For a while, an inn in Pinehurst was a popular dinner stop for Greyhound buses traveling between Ashland and Klamath Falls. Sadly, that inn later burned down. By 1990, the main building left was a two-story log structure built in the 1920s. This log building was a roadhouse, a place for travelers to stop, rest, and eat, especially after the main highway (OR 66) was built. For a time, it was a bed and breakfast called the Historic Pinehurst Inn, but it has since closed.
Historic Stops Nearby
The original stagecoach stop in the Pinehurst area was the 1904 ranch house at Green Springs Box R Ranch. Part of this historic property was sold in 2016 and now offers guest stays at New Frontier Ranch. Also nearby is the Buckhorn Mineral Springs Resort, a historic mineral spa that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Learning in Pinehurst
The Pinehurst School is located about two miles west of the community, in an area called Lincoln. It's the only school in the Pinehurst School District. Students from kindergarten through eighth grade attend this school. The school building, built in 1908, is recognized by Jackson County for its important history.

Pinehurst has a type of weather known as a warm-summer Mediterranean climate. This means that the summers are warm and dry, but they don't get extremely hot. The average monthly temperatures stay below 71.6°F (22°C).
