How Louisiana State University Started

Louisiana State University was first created by the Louisiana General Assembly in 1853. It was known as the Louisiana State Seminary of Learning & Military Academy. This early school was located very close to Pineville. The first classes began on January 2, 1860. General William Tecumseh Sherman, who was from Ohio, served as its first leader.

Changes to Local Laws

For a long time, Pineville was a "dry" city. This meant that selling alcohol was not allowed. In the 1980s, people voted to keep this ban. However, in 2013, voters decided to allow restaurants to sell alcoholic drinks. This change was supported by Mayor Clarence Fields, who became mayor in 1999.
