Pingree Grove is a small but growing village located in Kane County, Illinois, in the United States. It's known for its rapid growth in recent years.

In the year 2000, only 124 people lived there. But by 2010, the population had jumped to 4,532 residents. The latest count in 2020 showed even more growth, with 10,365 people calling Pingree Grove home.

Where is Pingree Grove?

Pingree Grove is located in the northern part of Kane County, Illinois. It has several neighboring communities. To the west, you'll find Hampshire. To the north is Huntley. Gilberts is to the northeast, and the city of Elgin is to the southeast.

A major road, U.S. Route 20, goes right through the village. This road can take you about 17 miles northwest to Marengo. If you head southeast on the same road, you'll reach Elgin in about 7 miles. For those wondering about bigger cities, Downtown Chicago is about 45 miles southeast of Pingree Grove.

The village covers a total area of about 3.67 square miles (9.51 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

A Growing Population

Pingree Grove has seen a lot of changes in its population over the years. For many decades, it remained a very small village.

  • In 1910, there were 135 residents.
  • By 1990, the population had slightly decreased to 138.
  • In 2000, it was 124 people.

However, after 2000, the village began to grow very quickly.

  • By 2010, the population had increased to 4,532 people.
  • In 2020, it reached 10,365 residents.

This rapid growth shows how much the village has developed in a short time!

The 2010 Earthquake

On February 10, 2010, Pingree Grove and the areas around it experienced an earthquake. Earthquakes happen when the ground shakes due to sudden movement in the Earth's crust.

This earthquake was not very strong. It had a magnitude of 3.8. The shaking was considered "Light" on the Mercalli intensity scale, which describes how much an earthquake is felt by people and how much damage it causes. Even though it was light, people felt it as far as 134 miles (214 km) away in Madison, Wisconsin.

When the earthquake first happened, people thought its starting point, called the epicenter, was near Sycamore. But later, scientists from the USGS (United States Geological Survey) figured out that the epicenter was actually closer to Virgil. This was the first earthquake felt in Northern Illinois since a slightly stronger one in 2004.
