The film stars Johnny Depp as the quirky pirate Captain Jack Sparrow. Orlando Bloom plays the brave blacksmith Will Turner. Keira Knightley is the spirited Elizabeth Swann. The story follows Jack and Will as they try to rescue Elizabeth. She has been kidnapped by the fearsome Captain Hector Barbossa and his crew. Barbossa's crew sails on the mysterious ship, the Black Pearl. They are all suffering from a strange and powerful curse.
The idea for the film began in 2000 at Disney Studios. Writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio helped create the story. They added the magical curse to connect the film to the theme park ride. Filming happened from October 2002 to March 2003. Locations included Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Los Angeles, California.
Pirates of the Caribbean first showed at the Disneyland Resort on June 28, 2003. It was released in theaters in the United States on July 9. The film led to four exciting sequels: Dead Man's Chest (2006), At World's End (2007), On Stranger Tides (2011), and Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017).
Story of the Black Pearl
A Mysterious Medallion
The story begins in the early 1700s. Young Elizabeth Swann sails with her father, Governor Weatherby Swann. They find a shipwreck and rescue a boy named Will Turner. Elizabeth discovers a gold medallion around Will's neck. She hides it, then sees a ghostly ship sailing away.
Eight years later, in Port Royal, Jamaica, Will is a blacksmith. Lieutenant Norrington is becoming a commodore. Suddenly, the famous pirate Captain Jack Sparrow arrives in Port Royal. He is looking for a ship.
Norrington asks Elizabeth to marry him. She faints and falls into the ocean. The medallion she carries sends out a strange pulse. Jack rescues Elizabeth and finds the medallion. Governor Swann orders Jack's capture because he is a pirate. Jack escapes into Will's smithy. Will and Jack fight, but neither wins.
Pirates Attack Port Royal
That night, the pirate crew of the Black Pearl attacks Port Royal. They are searching for the special medallion. They take Elizabeth hostage. She tells Captain Barbossa her name is "Elizabeth Turner."
Barbossa explains that the medallion is part of a cursed treasure. This treasure was once used to pay Hernán Cortés to stop his attacks on the Aztecs. Barbossa's crew stole the gold from Isla de Muerta. Because of this, they became cursed. They are now undead skeletons who cannot feel anything. To break the curse, they must return all the gold. They also need a blood offering from each crew member. One medallion is missing. It belonged to "Bootstrap" Bill Turner, who was thrown overboard. Barbossa believes Elizabeth is Bootstrap's daughter. He plans to use her blood for the ritual.
A Daring Rescue Mission
Will wants to save Elizabeth. He frees Jack, and they steal a fast ship called the Interceptor. They sail to Tortuga to find a crew. There, Joshamee Gibbs tells Will that Jack used to be the captain of the Black Pearl. Barbossa led a mutiny and left Jack on a deserted island.
They sneak into the treasure cave on Isla de Muerta. Barbossa tries to break the curse using Elizabeth's blood, but it fails. Will and Elizabeth escape with her medallion. Jack is captured and imprisoned on the Pearl. A battle starts between the ships. The Interceptor is badly damaged. Will learns that Bootstrap was his father. He surrenders, threatening to give up his life if Elizabeth and the crew are not safe. Barbossa imprisons the crew. He leaves Jack and Elizabeth on the same island where Jack was before.
Jack reveals that the island was a secret hiding spot for illegal goods. People who traded these goods rescued him quickly. Elizabeth uses a bonfire, fueled by the hidden goods, to signal for help. The Royal Navy rescues them. Elizabeth agrees to marry Norrington if he saves Will from Barbossa.
The Final Battle
Jack and Norrington plan to surprise the pirates at Isla de Muerta. Jack secretly meets the pirates. He convinces Barbossa to wait to break the curse until after defeating Norrington's men. After Barbossa's crew leaves, Jack frees Will. Jack then attacks Barbossa. He had secretly taken a medallion, making himself immortal for a short time.
Elizabeth frees Jack's crew on the Pearl. But they refuse to help and sail away without her. Jack shoots Barbossa. At the same moment, Will returns his and Jack's medallions to the chest with their blood. This breaks the curse and kills Barbossa. The Navy quickly defeats the remaining pirates.
Captain Jack's Return
Back in Port Royal, Jack is about to face serious punishment for his pirate actions. Will declares his love for Elizabeth and rescues Jack. Norrington's soldiers surround Jack and Will. But Elizabeth stands with Will. This makes Governor Swann order the soldiers to stop.
Jack falls into the sea and is picked up by the Black Pearl. Norrington understands that Elizabeth loves Will. He decides to give Jack a head start before chasing him. Governor Swann gives his blessing to Will and Elizabeth. Jack becomes captain of the Pearl once again.
In a short scene after the credits, Barbossa's pet monkey climbs into the gold chest. It takes a coin, becoming undead once more.

Making the Movie
From Ride to Film
The idea for Pirates of the Caribbean came from the popular Disney theme park ride. In 2001, Jay Wolpert wrote an early script. Later, Stuart Beattie helped rewrite it, bringing his knowledge of pirate stories. Screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio also joined. They suggested adding a supernatural curse to the story, inspired by the ride itself.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer became involved and helped shape the film. Gore Verbinski signed on as the director in May 2002. He wanted to use modern technology to bring the old pirate movie style back to life. Verbinski remembered the fun and spooky feeling of the theme park ride from his childhood.
Choosing the Actors
The character of Jack Sparrow was first imagined with Hugh Jackman in mind. However, Johnny Depp was chosen for the role. Depp found the script very unique. He decided to base Jack Sparrow's personality on rock star Keith Richards. At first, some Disney executives were unsure about Depp's unusual portrayal. But Depp stood by his choices, and it paid off!
Director Verbinski asked Geoffrey Rush to play Captain Barbossa. Rush saw Barbossa as a hero who just wanted to break the curse. Orlando Bloom was cast as Will Turner after reading the script. Jonathan Pryce took on the role of Governor Swann.
Building the Pirate World
The filmmakers wanted the movie to feel like a historical fantasy. Many actors wore special makeup and contact lenses. Johnny Depp had contacts that acted like sunglasses. Geoffrey Rush and Lee Arenberg wore special contacts to give their characters a spooky look. Mackenzie Crook wore two contacts for his character's wooden eye.
The crew spent five months building the cavern where the pirates try to break their curse. They filled it with water and 882 gold coins. The Port Royal fortress was built in California. The movie's main ships, the Black Pearl, Dauntless, and Interceptor, were mostly built on docks. Only six days were spent filming battles on the open sea. Special computer effects helped finish the ships and create the skeletal pirates. Each scene with the cursed pirates was filmed twice: once with actors, and once without them, to add the skeletons later.
Movie Music
The music for the film was composed by Klaus Badelt. Hans Zimmer also helped produce the score. The music helps make the movie exciting and adventurous.
The famous song Elizabeth Swann sings in the film is "Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life for Me)". This song was written by George Bruns with lyrics by Xavier "X" Atencio. It is the same song heard throughout the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland and Magic Kingdom.
