History of Pittsfield
The first settlers arrived in the area that is now Pittsfield around 1793.
Town Formation
The Town of Pittsfield was officially created in 1797. It was formed from a part of the Town of Burlington. Over the years, Pittsfield's size changed twice. In 1806, some of its land was used to form the Town of New Lisbon. Later, in 1859, another part became part of the Town of Morris.
How Pittsfield Got Its Name
The town was named by the Noble family, who moved here from Pittsfield, Massachusetts. They named their new home after their old one. The area they settled in is now known as Pittsfield Centre.
Early Industries and Life
The hamlet of Pittsfield, also called "Pittsfield Centre," used to have a train stop on the Ontario & Western Railroad. This railway branch went to Edmeston from New Berlin. During World War I, people like Richard Freeman and Charles Walton shipped lumber from here.
Ketchum is another area in Pittsfield. It was named after Rev. Orvib Ketchum, who started a church there. This area also had a schoolhouse, a store, sawmills, and a cemetery. The Ball family made rope nearby, twisting hemp into twine and then into strong ropes.
County Route 13, which connects Morris and New Berlin, is known as "the turnpike" by local people. It was built in 1832 and was the last road in the area to charge a toll because it was very expensive to build.
Ebenezer Chapel, located near the southwest border, was a small settlement once called "Hayti." The Beardslee Farm is an important historical site in Pittsfield. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000, recognizing its historical value.
