A Look Back in Time: Pixley's History
How Pixley Began
Pixley started in 1884 because some people wanted to buy and sell land. Two investors, Darwin C. Allen and William B. Bradbury, knew their plan would work best if the area had a train connection. They reached out to Frank M. Pixley, who was a friend of Leland Stanford, a very important person with the Southern Pacific Railroad.
In 1886, Frank Pixley joined them as a partner. They bought more land around the area. When the Southern Pacific Railroad extended its tracks to this new townsite, Pixley began to grow. The partners made good money from selling the land. They even offered special train fares to bring people from other parts of California and as far away as Boston to see the new land and imagine investing there.
Early Residents
The very first house built in Pixley was for Emma, who was the widow of Frank Pixley's late brother, William. Emma lived there with her three sons and daughter. She also bought a piece of land nearby where she farmed. Later, her family moved back to San Francisco. Frank Pixley helped advertise the new town named after him in his journal, The Argonaut.
The Cotton Strike of 1933
In 1933, Pixley was one of the towns involved in the San Joaquin cotton strike. This was a time when many farm workers, especially those picking cotton, stopped working. They wanted better pay for their hard work. There were some difficult moments during the strike.
Thousands of workers gathered in Tulare for a large gathering, which was one of the biggest worker demonstrations in California's history. This important event is even mentioned in the famous book The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck.
