Plain City was settled by pioneers looking for new farmland. In 1847, wagon trains of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints began arriving in the Salt Lake Valley. By 1858, farmers from nearby towns like Lehi and Kay's Creek were searching for new places to live and farm.
On March 17, 1859, a group led by Lorin Farr arrived to start a new settlement. They quickly planned the town using a grid system of streets and blocks. Each block was about 5 acres in size and divided into four lots. The first settlers got to choose their favorite spot.
