Plainfield is a small town located in Otsego County, New York, in the United States. It's found in the northwestern part of Otsego County.

In 2010, about 915 people lived here. By 2016, the population was estimated to be around 867.

Plainfield's Early History

Plainfield was first settled around 1793. The first settlers built their homes near what is now called Plainfield Center.

The town of Plainfield was officially created in 1799. It was formed from a part of the nearby Town of Richfield.

Geography and Location

Plainfield covers an area of about 29.5 square miles (76.4 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

Rivers and Borders

The western edge of Plainfield is marked by the Unadilla River. This river also forms the border with Madison County. A small part of the border also touches Oneida County.

The Unadilla River is special because it splits into two smaller rivers, the East Branch and the West Branch. This split happens at a place called Unadilla Forks.

Main Roads

New York State Route 51 is an important highway that runs through the eastern part of Plainfield. It travels from north to south.

  • Leonardsville – Another hamlet, located by the Unadilla River. Most of Leonardsville is actually in Madison County.
  • Lloydsville – A small hamlet also located near the Unadilla River.
  • Mount Markham – This is a high point, or elevation, found near Unadilla Forks.
  • Noahs Rump – Another elevation located in the southeastern part of Plainfield.
  • Plainfield Center – A hamlet in the northern part of Plainfield. This area was once home to a Welsh Colony, where people spoke Welsh and had a church for Welsh services.
  • Spooners Corners – This spot is in the northeastern part of Plainfield. It's where NY-51 meets Skaneateles Turnpike. The name comes from an early settler named Ruggles Spooner.
  • Unadilla Forks – A hamlet in the northwestern part of Plainfield, right by the Unadilla River.
  • Welch Hill – An elevation located to the east of Noahs Rump.
