Planada is a small community located in Merced County, California, United States. Its name comes from the Spanish word for "Plain". Planada is about 9 miles (14 km) east of Merced, which is the main city in the county. It sits at an elevation of 226 feet (69 meters) above sea level. In 2020, about 4,164 people lived in Planada.

History of Planada

Planada was first called Whitton by the railroad workers. The first European settlers in the area were Swiss dairy farmers. They decided to rename the settlement Geneva.

The Geneva post office opened in 1896. It closed for a short time in 1897 but reopened in 1898. In 1911, the community held a contest to choose a new name for the town. The name Planada was chosen as the winner. The San Francisco and San Joaquin Valley Railroad, built in the late 1890s, had a station named "Geneva" which later became the "Planada" station.

Recently, the state government passed a bill to help Planada residents. This was important because many people in the community needed support.

Geography and Location

Planada is found in the eastern part of Merced County. It is located in California's large Central Valley.

California State Route 140 is a main road that goes through Planada. This road leads west about 9 miles (14 km) to Merced. It also goes northeast about 28 miles (45 km) to Mariposa, which is in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains.

The United States Census Bureau reports that Planada covers a total area of about 1.7 square miles (4.5 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
