Plantation is a part of the big city of Glasgow in Scotland. It's located south of the River Clyde. This area used to be part of an older town called Govan.

Plantation is found between Cessnock and Ibrox to the west. To its east is Kingston, and to the south is Kinning Park.

History of Plantation

How Plantation Got Its Name

The land that is now Plantation was once a large estate called Craigiehall. In 1783, a man named John Robertson bought this 32-hectare (80-acre) estate. He worked at a bank in Glasgow. His family also owned large farms in the West Indies. He decided to rename the estate "Plantation," possibly to remember those farms.

Later, in 1793, the estate was bought by John Mair, a merchant. He worked on improving the buildings and gardens. In 1829, the Maclean family took over the estate. William Maclean, a local official known as a Baillie, became the new owner. A Baillie was like an important town council member in Scotland.

Changes Over Time

As years passed, the Plantation estate changed a lot. A railway line was built through the southern part of the land. Also, shipbuilding yards along the River Clyde cut off the estate from the river. Around 1900, the original big house was taken down. New apartment buildings, called tenements, were built for people to live in.

In the 1970s, many of these old tenement buildings were demolished.

Modern Plantation

Key Locations and Roads

Today, Plantation is an important area where many major roads meet. It's close to the Tradeston area. Here, the M8 motorway connects with the M77 and M74 motorways.

Plantation Quay, which is part of the area, was used for the Glasgow Garden Festival in 1988. This was a big event with gardens and displays. Later, the Glasgow Science Centre was built on this site.

Local Life and Landmarks

Some of the streets in Plantation include Lorne Street, MacLean Street, and Plantation Street. The main primary school for children in the area is Lorne Street Primary School.

There are also local churches, like the Church of Scotland and Harper Memorial Baptist Church. This Baptist church is named after John Harper. He was the first pastor there and sadly died when the famous ship Titanic sank in 1912.
