Website Playas de Tijuana

Playas de Tijuana means "beaches of Tijuana" in Spanish. It's the part of Tijuana that is furthest to the west. This area stretches from the United States border in the north all the way to Rosarito Beach Municipality in the south. A famous place here, the Bullring by the Sea, first opened in 1960.

A Look Back: History of Playas

The border between Baja California in Mexico and California in the United States was set in 1848. A special stone monument was placed near the ocean in 1851 to mark this border.

Playas de Tijuana started to be built up in 1957 with new neighborhoods called Soler and Costa Azul. The name "Playas de Tijuana" was officially given in 1959. More development happened through the 1980s, making it the area we see today.

Where is Playas de Tijuana?

The borough of Playas de Tijuana is located in the city of Tijuana. It has the Pacific Ocean to its west and the United States (California) to its north. To the south, it borders the municipality of Playas de Rosarito. To the east, it borders other Tijuana boroughs like Centro and San Antonio de los Buenos.

Playas de Tijuana is very close to the U.S. cities of Imperial Beach and San Diego. However, there isn't a border crossing directly in this area. The land just north of the border, in the Tijuana River Valley, is mostly farms and open spaces.

  • Inspection and Verification: They check things and handle reports from citizens.

Fun Things to Do and See

Paseo Ensenada is a popular street where people meet up and spend time. You'll find many shops and businesses there. Plaza Coronado, at the start of Paseo Ensenada, is a big entertainment spot, especially for young people.

If the ocean water is clean, you can enjoy water sports like surfing, bodyboarding, and kayaking. The Monumental bullring is also located here. It's a large arena where different shows and events take place. The Tijuana campus of the Universidad Iberoamericana is also in Playas.

Playas de Tijuana has its own Arts & Culture House. This place offers many creative activities like ballet, drawing, painting, and dancing classes. It's located in the same area as the local government building. There's also a smaller bullfight ring called the Cortijo San José, which sometimes hosts rodeo shows. Next to these buildings, there's a public square where the independence celebration is held every September 15.

Many local groups in Playas de Tijuana work to make the area better. They focus on things like keeping the beaches clean and protecting open spaces and parks for everyone to enjoy.

Federal Highway 1-D starts just south of this borough. It leads to Rosarito and Ensenada.
