Baccharis plummerae, also known as Plummer's baccharis, is a type of plant found in California. It belongs to the Baccharis family. This plant was named after Sara Plummer Lemmon, an American botanist who lived from 1836 to 1923.

Where Plummer's Baccharis Grows

This plant is native only to Southern California. It grows in special areas called chaparral habitats. You can find it along the coast and in mountain ranges. These include the Western Transverse Ranges and the Outer South California Coast Ranges. It also grows on the northern Channel Islands of California.

Most of these plants are found from southern Monterey County down to Los Angeles County. There are also a few smaller groups of plants in Riverside County.

What Plummer's Baccharis Looks Like

Plummer's baccharis is a shrub that looks like a bush. It has many straight, thin stems. These stems can grow up to about 2 meters (6.5 feet) tall.

Leaves and Flowers

The leaves of this plant are long and narrow, or sometimes oval-shaped. They can have small teeth along their edges. Each leaf can be up to 4.5 centimeters (about 1.7 inches) long.

This shrub is dioecious. This means it has separate male and female plants. The male plants produce one type of flower head, and the female plants produce another. Each flower head is covered by special leaf-like parts called phyllaries. These phyllaries are often sticky.

Seeds and Fruit

After the flowers bloom, the female plants produce fruit. The fruit is a ribbed achene, which is a small, dry seed. It has a fluffy top called a pappus. This pappus helps the seed float away in the wind. It is usually about 7 or 8 millimeters long.
