Pocket Monsters (ポケットモンスター (Poketto Monsutā)) is one of the very first manga series based on the popular Pokémon games. It was first released in Japan. The series ran for 13 volumes, which are like individual books.
In Singapore, the manga was published in English by Chuang Yi in 2005. It was given a new name there: Pokémon Pocket Monsters. The first stories take place in the Kanto and Johto regions. Later, new series were created based on other regions like Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, and Alola. The author who created all these manga stories is Kosaku Anakubo.
On October 11, 2019, it was announced that the Pocket Monsters manga would finish after 23 years of exciting adventures.

Story of Pocket Monsters
This manga series follows a young boy named Red. He is on an exciting journey to complete his Pokédex, which is like an encyclopedia of all Pokémon. Red has a friendly rival named Green. They both want to become the best Pokémon masters.
What makes this manga special is that some Pokémon can actually talk like humans! One of Red's main Pokémon is a Clefairy (called Pippi in Japan). This Clefairy is thought to be the main character, even though it usually follows Red. It can be a bit silly and sometimes gets into trouble because of its big mouth. But surprisingly, Clefairy often comes up with clever ideas to help Red and Pikachu.
In the first few manga books, Red's team mostly includes just Pikachu and Clefairy. Later on, Red also gains a strong friend in a Pokémon called Tyrogue. Unlike Clefairy, Pikachu cannot talk in this series.
The story also takes readers to the Johto region. Here, Red meets new trainers named Gold and Silver. These characters are likely based on the heroes from the Pokémon video games. The adventure then moves to the Hoenn region in the last volume of the first series. Red even considers getting a Torchic there. After this, the story continues under the new title Pokémon Ruby-Sapphire.
Main Characters
- Red (レッド ([Reddo] Error: {{nihongo}}: text has italic markup (help))): His full name is Isamu Akai (赤井 勇, Akai Isamu). Red is the main human character. His goal is to complete the Pokémon Zukan (Pokédex). He is also Green's rival.
- Clefairy (Pippi in Japan): This Pokémon is Red's very first ally. It is known for being a bit rude but also very funny. Clefairy loves to do silly things to get attention.
- Pikachu: Clefairy's younger cousin. Pikachu joins Red and Clefairy on their adventures. Unlike Clefairy, Pikachu does not speak human language.
- Green (グリーン ([Gurīn] Error: {{nihongo}}: text has italic markup (help))): His full name is Kai Midorikawa (緑川 開, Midorikawa Kai). Green is Red's main rival.
