The lighthouse at Point No Point

Point No Point is a piece of land that sticks out into the water. You can find it on the northeast side of the Kitsap Peninsula in Washington, USA. This spot is famous for two main reasons. First, an important agreement called the Point No Point Treaty was signed here. Second, it's home to the Point No Point Lighthouse.

The name "Point No Point" might sound a bit funny! It was named by Charles Wilkes in 1841. He was exploring Puget Sound at the time. He called it this because from far away, it looks like a big point of land. But when you get closer, it doesn't seem like much of a point at all! It's known for its unusual name.

The weather here is usually mild. Winters bring a lot of rain, and summers are not too hot. This climate creates many different places for plants and animals to live. The sandy beaches have lots of driftwood. There are also some structures for boating. Behind the beaches, you'll find a big marsh. This marsh has both fresh and salty water. The strong tides around the point bring many different kinds of birds. There is also a calm bay nearby.

Discovering Birds at Point No Point

Point No Point is one of the best places in Washington to see many different types of birds. Birdwatchers love this spot! The land is owned by the U.S. Coast Guard and a private owner. Both are happy for people to come and watch birds.

Common Birds You Can Spot

This area is especially great for seeing water birds. You might see gulls, cormorants, loons, and terns. Many types of ducks and grebes also visit. Look for mergansers, scoters, and brant. When the tide is moving fast, you can often see huge groups of Bonaparte's gulls and other seabirds. They gather to feed on fish.

Sometimes, you can even spot jaegers flying among the gulls. In November, it's a great place to see Ancient murrelets offshore. Along the sandy beaches, you'll find shorebirds. The marsh is a good spot for passerine birds, especially when they are migrating. Point No Point has even had rare birds visit, both in the water and in the marsh.
